SOS CHILDREN’S VILLAGES, ZANZIBAR

The Zanzibar archipelago comprises Unguja and Pemba islands together with other small islets. Zanzibar, which is an integral part of the United Republic of Tanzania, has a population approaching a million (1,000,000) people.

The SOS Children’s Village Zanzibar, headed by Mr. Nassor Hemed Nassor, was opened in 1991. The Village has 11 family houses accommodating 85 children, who are looked after by 11 SOS Mothers. There are two Youth Homes, one for boys with 28 youth and the other for girls with 5 youth. The boys currently occupy 3 rented houses, but future plans include the construction a Youth Home as soon as suitable land is identified and obtained.

The SOS Kindergarten in Zanzibar, which was operational on 10th April 1995, has adapted well to the new teaching system of Jolly Phonics. Due to the high demand, the Kindergarten works on a double shift session for two different groups and accommodates 150 pupils. Children attending the Kindergarten are aged between the ages of 4 ½ - 6 ½ years.

748 students attend the SOS Hermann Gmeiner School in Zanzibar and the facility has a total of 39 teachers. The school still maintains its status of achieving good overall results in the National Form IV (‘O’ Level) examination.

The Hermann Gmeiner Medical Centre avails its services to the Village, Kindergarten and HG School, SOS staff and their families as well as the community at large. Future expansion plans include the construction of a Mother and Child Clinic and Well Woman Clinic.
