New Initiatives in the East African Region
Ethiopia – The SOS Children's Village Gode opened in October 2005. The village has 12 family houses and an SOS Kindergarten. Located on the same premises is an SOS Hermann Gmeiner School and an SOS Medical Centre which incorporates a small maternity hospital. The hospital is equipped to carry out surgery if necessary.

Kenya – A new SOS Children’s Village containing 13 family houses and an SOS Kindergarten opened in October 2005.

Somaliland – A new SOS Children’s Village containing 12 family houses, together with a kindergarten, is under construction in Hargeisa. The project will also house an SOS Social and Medical Centre. It is being financed by SOS promoting and supporting associations in Norway, Sweden and Denmark.

Tanzania – A new SOS Children’s Village is soon to open in Dar es Salaam. It will consist of 13 family houses and will have an adjoining SOS Kindergarten. It is principally financed by SOS Denmark, although one house is being financed by SOS Switzerland. An SOS Children's Village National Office has also opened in Dar es Salaam.

Uganda – A new SOS Children's Village is planned in Gulu northern Uganda. Currently SOS Children's Villages operates an emergency relief programme in Gulu, incorporating a temporary children's village, an SOS Day Care Centre for under fives and an SOS Social and Medical Centre. The day care, social and medical centres will stay on the current site, while the village will be built on new land donated by the Gulu municipality.
