5 out of 5 stars Small changes make a difference!   August 5, 2005

So far I haven't seen a drastic change between the 2005 and 2006 version of Quicken Deluxe, though I just installed it today. However, I have found two features new to the 2006 version that I love. One is the ability to click on a category assigned to a transacton and immediately get a report of all prior transactions recorded for it - a really nice feature that allows you to quickly see the payments that have been made, the dates and the amounts. The other feature is the ability to attach receipts and cancelled checks to transactions. I do a lot of payments and shopping online and this is a great way to keep up with the receipts. Sometimes it's the small things that make a difference. While users of Quicken 2005 may not find it necessary to upgrade, users or prior versions may want to take a look at the 2006 models!

5 out of 5 stars The Best is Now Better!   August 12, 2005

I've been a user of Quicken software for years, upgrading most every year. This year I upgraded from the 2005 version.

There are a number of enhanced features new to this year. First, the reports feature has been improved substantially, making it much easier to customize the information desired. Second, there is now the ability to attach digital images of cancelled checks to their transactions in the register. While it takes a few moments to copy each check image then paste it to the transaction, it is a great feature. With an increasing number of Quicken users opting for electronic bill pay and debit cards, the number of checks written is becomingly relatively small, so the copying and pasting is not a hassle. Third, with each category entered for a transaction, there is a drop-down report of recent expenditures in that category. This feature is helpful on getting a better grasp on spending trends.

I've tried Microsoft Money trial versions, including MS Money 2006. MS Money doesn't come close to the versatility and reliability of Quicken. With Quicken 2006, the best is now even better!

5 out of 5 stars Easy to use and feature laden   January 7, 2006

Just upgraded to Quicken 2006 Deluxe from Quicken 98 (yep, you read that right, as in 1998) Deluxe.

Very easy to install and upgrade the software.
Automatically imported and converted my password protected Quicken 98 files.

Did *NOT* import my Quicken Home Inventory. I have not yet found where the Q98 inventory files are, and I have not been able to find any documentation in the help files to indicate if this is a bug, or intended. The Home Inventory hasn't changed one bit in eight years -- this is exactly like the Q98 version. Surprisingly, there is no ability to attach pictures to items in the inventory.

I have not yet found a new feature that has made me think: "WOW this is really great and justifies worth spending time and money to upgrade", but it clearly has many more features than my old version. I haven't noticed anything that has changed for the worse, or been taken away, so all-in-all, this upgrade was worthwhile.

Here are some observations so far:

Installation created a bunch of links on my desktop for banking services , credit cards, credit reports. I don't know what these were -- I just deleted them

Automatically assigned categories to groups and then used these groups in budgets and reports. Some of these groups were completely wrong, and it took me a while to fix them.

Has two overview pages:
1. "Quicken Home" that is *very* customizable to provide an overview on one page of pretty much anything you want to see with four tabs, each with different perspectives or your finances.
2. "Financial Overview" with tabs that give summaries of net worth, planning and tax situations.

Has a nice pop-up report on the register -- select a transaction, click the icon and a report pops-up showing all recent transactions for that payee. Pop-up report has button to create a full payee report as well. I find this very useful.

*Much* easier to use the investment portfolio planning and reporting tools in this version.

Setting up stock option grants and ESPP transactions is a breeze. I haven't been able to figure out how to set up restricted stock grants.

It has a fixed list of asset classes (large cap, small cap, international, etc) and you cannot add more asset classes. This means that if you have a chunk of your portfolio in REITs, or gold stocks, or sector funds, then the asset allocation tools do not help much.

*Much* easier to set up and analyze budgets. Easy to plan budget on a monthly, quarterly or annual basis for each category. Can easily get a report of previous year's spending for a particular category while developing a budget.

Layout is very different from Q98, with much more information shown on a screen, which is either an advantage, or just clutter. Fairly easy to customize the screen layouts.

Has very useful full-screen view just by pressing F11.

However, some other key combinations are inconsistent and unpredictable. Almost every Windows software that I use control-insert, control-delete, and shift-insert are copy, cut and paste. In the Q2006 register, this is true, but for some bizarre reason control-insert does not work in the budget -- it minimizes that window and returns to the register.

Did not import savings goals as savings goals, but imported them as assets: I am not sure if this is a bug or feature. I haven't figured out how to make them savings goals so that I can get 'progress against goal' reports.

Some of my saved reports were imported just as previous, some required tweaking to get them the way I like them, and some were totally mangled and I had to re-create them.

I have not tried the Quicken Online BillPay -- my bank gives me free online bill pay.

One last note: to be able to download stock prices you must register the software -- fair enough, but you must also create a quicken.com account. I have no idea why this is needed, or what the benefits are. Seems that this is some sort of marketing ploy by Intuit, but I haven't been able to figure out the catch yet.

It is unclear to me what, if any, information is sent to Quicken or how that information is used by Quicken when I use online services such as download bank transactions or download stock quotes.

I just had a on-line chat with William at the Quicken Help and Support Center. Here's the transcript:

Me: How do I cancel the quicken.com account
William: If you don't want to use QIuicken.com please don't open it again it will automatically be deleted.
Me: How long does it take before it is automatically deleted?
William: It will take up to 3 months.
Me: How do I cancel the account if I don't want to wait that long?
William: We cannot cancel the account manually it is canceled automatically.
Me: Thanks for the information. That was very helpful. Bye.

Transcript of on-line chat with Samuel at the Quicken Help and Support Center:

Me: Sometimes when I start Quicken 2006 for Windows, I get a message like "Do you want to update Quicken now?" What exactly is being updated?
Samuel: The update message that you are getting is to update the current version of Quicken you are using. This helps us to work in Quicken more easily.
Me: What exactly is getting updated?
Samuel: It updates basic features of Quicken and any fixes earlier known issues.
Me: So these are bug fixes?
Samuel: Yes
Me: Is any information about my accounts sent to Quicken during this update?
Samuel: No
Me: Where is the list of bugs that are getting fixed with each update?
Samuel: You can check it at Quicken.com
Me: Can you give me the link to the exact page that shows the bug fixes?
Samuel: I am sorry, there is no such single list available in a link that I can provide to you. For more details, you can visit Quicken.com
Me: OK, thanks.

Me: Is there a way to update Quicken without waiting for the automatic update at startup?
Samuel: You can go for One Step Update. This option is given under Online menu.
Me: Does that update the bug fixes?
Samuel: Yes
Me: OK That's all very helpful. Thanks very much for your help. Bye.

Karan K.: Hi, my name is Karan K.. How may I help you?
Me: If I change the dollar amount of a scheduled transaction the budget line item for that category changes as well. How do I stop that?
Karan K.: So, you change the amount of a scheduled transaction, the budget for that item automatically changes. Is that correct?
Me: Yes. I want to stop the changes to the budget
Karan K.: This is because you have created automatic budget which is based on the transactions entered in Quicken.
Me: OK. How do I change that feature of an existing budget?
Karan K.: You can create manual budget.
Karan K.: Please open Quicken.
Karan K.: From Quicken menu, go to Planning >> Budget.\
Karan K.: Click on manual and click on Create Budget.
Me: Nope. I want to change an existing budget from automatic to manual
Karan K.: I am sorry to inform you that its not possible in Quicken.
Me: Is this a bug, or a feature?
Karan K.: Its not a bug, this is a feature of Quicken. Its by default.
Me: OK thanks. This information was very helpful. Bye.

5 out of 5 stars A loyal Money user has switched and couldn't be happier   September 30, 2005

I was a die-hard Money user for many, many, years. I hadn't used Quicken since the DOS days. Money 2006 finally pushed me over the edge. Quicken bloated? Are you kidding me? Money 2006 is far more bloated and taxes your system much heavier than Quicken. Quicken 2006 loaded twice as fast on my laptop than Money did.

I had tested Money 2006 using their trial download product that will last until 12/31/05. Upon opening Money, you have to sign in to your MSN account. How stupid is that? Just start the freaking program already. Whatever Money was doing in the background, my Dell laptop couldn't handle the fat. Using Money was very frustrating. So frustrating in fact, that I purchased Quickin knowing full well I wouldn't be able to take it back. Was I glad I did!

Quicken loads in half the time. Updates are smooth and fast. Initial setting up was even easy, except for a small password issue. Quicken cannot handle passwords of 30 character in length. I had several of my online accounts with these long passwords and Quicken would report that it was unable to log me in due to invalid username or password. So I had my bank on the phone and she could see everything I was doing. Then I changed my password to 20 characters and bingo! Quicken was able to download. So keep your passwords under 30 characters.

I also think it is much easier to navigate in Quicken (this from someone that hasn't used it in years). Quicken is also more intuitive with so many features. Some of the most handy are: autorename, schedule payments, graphs and so much more.

I will say that Money has a more "polished" look than Quicken. However, that "polish" comes at a price, specifically bloating down your system.

5 out of 5 stars Upgraded from Quicken 2002   October 3, 2005

Easy Install. Easy Upgrade and what an improvement over Quicken 2002. Everything downloads just fine. Quicken is a relatively complex piece of software, and it helps to read over the instructions. There are some things I don't think I'll ever need so I just don't use them. For one, I would never backup my financial information on line. Quicken does import QIF files from certain accounts. But QIF files are a problem and they do lead to duplicate results.

So, based on my experience, if you're running 2002, which a lot of people are, this will likely be a good upgrade.
